Kuala Lumpur ranked third best city in Asia, eight globally to reside in

Kuala Lumpur has been ranked the third-best city in Asia to reside in, and eighth globally, in a recent survey of people living and working abroad.

The recognition comes from the annual Expat City Ranking by InterNations, the world's largest community for expats, which covered 49 cities worldwide.

Malaysia's regional and global standing

In Asia, Kuala Lumpur trails only the UAE's Ras Al Khaimah and Abu Dhabi, ranked first and second respectively. Globally, it placed eighth, behind those two UAE cities, four cities in Spain, and Mexico City.

The rankings draw on the experiences of over 12,000 expats surveyed globally, covering 177 nationalities across 181 countries and territories, weighing factors like ease of settling in, personal finance, and quality of life.

Malaysia's overall ranking improves

In InterNations' broader Expat Insider 2023 report, Malaysia ranked as the fourth-best country in the world for expats overall, behind Mexico, Spain, and Panama. The report also noted a marked jump in Malaysia's quality-of-life ranking, from 44th of 52 destinations in 2022 to 29th of 53 this year.
